Dost by Abida Parveen - Sufi Song about the Wondrous Divine Friend

art work by Rassouli

Kahoon Dost se
Dost ki baat kya kya

Rahi dushmanon se
mulaaqaat kya kya

Wuh ‘ishwe wuh ghamze
wuh naghme wuh jalwe

Talab kar rahe ham
aafaat kya kya

Jahaan mujh ko aaya  khayaal

aa gaye wuh

Dikhaayi hain dil ne
karaamaat kya kya

Nah thi guftugu darmiyaan

phir bhi un se
Pas-i parda-i dil hui baat kya kya

Kahoon Dost se

Dost ki baat kya kya

What wondrous secrets can I speak
to the Divine Friend Who knows it all!

Other than the Friend,
who else is worthy of contemplation?

Those rapturous glances, those mischievous graces
Those enchanting music and dazzling unveiling
Oh what wondrous calamities
are we falling headlong!

As soon as thought of the Friend arrives,
He appears in the heart

What wondrous miracles is made visible
in the heart of heart!

Though nothing was said to Him face to face
What wondrous conversations occurred
behind the veils of this heart!

What wondrous secrets can I speak
to the Divine Friend Who knows all!

Lyrics by Baba Zaheen Shah Taji. A non-literal translation by Sadiq Alam. The song is beautifully rendered by Abida Parveen, Queen of Sufi Qawwali and Songs, which expresses the pain and ecstasy of being fully consumed into the fire of transcendent love of the Divine. It probes the deeper question of the soul which wish to have the most intimate conversation with the Supreme Soul and then realizes what is left there to be said when He knows all secrets of our heart.

"The Divine Lord is the Friend / Patron / Protecting Friend (al-Waliyy) of those who have faith" (The Quran, 2:257)
