Guru means one who has gravitation, around whom you suddenly feel as if you are being pulled. The guru is a tremendous magnet, with only one difference. The difference is: when you are pulled towards a guru you suddenly feel that you are being pulled inwards, not outwards. When you are pulled towards a guru, you have a strange feeling. The feeling is that you are being pulled towards him and at the same time you are being pulled inwards -- a very strange paradoxical phenomenon.
And the closer you come to your guru, the closer you come to yourself. The more you become attracted towards the guru, the more you become independent. The more you become surrendered to the guru, the more you feel that you have freedom you never had before.
When you die in your Master as a man, you become divine. A Master is a death and a resurrection. This day of Guru Purnima is a day of death and resurrection. It is no ordinary day – it is very symbolic. If you come to me (to a Spiritual Master), you come only in one way: if you come to die in me, and you will not be less by your dying – you will be more, you will be infinitely more. You will be losing nothing and you will be gaining all.
This death into a Master is what makes a man a disciple. It is no ordinary relationship; it is the only extraordinary relationship in the world. All other relationships are ordinary. All other relationships are part of the world. Only this relationship is not part of the world – it takes you beyond. It is a golden bridge from the visible to the invisible, from the material to the divine, from the known to the unknown, from death to deathlessness. But… you will have to die first.
Whom to Be with? Whom to Follow for Guidance and Truth?
O faithful ones, have taqwa and be with those who are truthful (saadiqeen).
~ The Light of Guidance 9:119
O my people, follow the messengers. Follow those who do not ask of you remunerations, and they are guided.
Ask the people of remembrance if you know not.
Are those who know and those who do not know - alike? Mindful only are the people of understanding.
So they found one of Our servants, on whom We had bestowed Mercy from Ourselves and whom We had taught Knowledge from Our own Presence.
How to Distinguish a True Teacher from False Ones?
And do not follow the vain desires of those who treat Our signs as falsehood and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, for they hold others as equal with their Guardian-Lord.
And do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.
... Exceed not in your religion the bounds (of what is proper), trespassing beyond the truth, nor follow the vain desires of people who went wrong in times gone by,- who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the even way.
Prayer to Find the Path of Those Upon Whom is Grace
Show us the right path, the path of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace. Not the path of those whose (allotment) is Divine wrath, nor of those who go astray.
