VERILY IT IS WE (THE DIVINE AUTHORITY) WHO GIVE LIFE TO THE DEAD AND WE WHO WRITE WHAT PRECEDES THEM AND WHAT IS IN THEIR FOOTPRINTS; AND WE RECORD EVERYTHING IN A CLEAR RECORD. (36:12)
Giving life to the death are of two kinds:
1) Giving life to inanimate things, that to create life from lifeless
2) To bestow life again to dead
Similarly bestowing life on Man is of two kinds:
1) To take away life from this body, that is to removing the soul. This is known as death. Again soul is given back to the body yet contained in dead stage.
2) To give eternal life by transcending death. Those who have attained grace of Allah, they are bestowed such permanent life (baqa) so that they are winner of death. They are not brought back to the dead country or station of suffering. Rather, they are freed from death and all suffering and granted the life in the garden, which is a primary revelation of the Quran.
It is worth observe that the Quranic Sign says, "We give life to the dead," it doesn't say, "We give life to death." Because death is negation of life, it is life which is bestowed on those who are dead, ie. those who are suspended from life.
The same Almighty Who writes down every genetic code within the tiniest of molecules carrying biological footprints for generations to come, the same Almighty writes down everything in a clear record. Every action of Man is preserved for the Ultimate Accountability. Elsewhere it is revealed: 'Blessed is the Lord in Whose hand is the Kingdom, and He has power over all things, Who has created death and life, that He may test you (as to) which of you is fairest in deeds.' (67:1-2)
AND SET FORTH AN EXAMPLE OF THE PEOPLE OF A TOWN, WHEN THERE CAME TO THEM THE MESSENGERS. (36:13)
WHEN WE SENT TO THEM TWO THEY REJECTED THEM BOTH. WE STRENGTHENED (THEM) WITH A THIRD, AND THEY SAID, "WE HAVE BEEN SENT TO YOU AS MESSENGERS." (36:14)
According to interpretations, the town mentioned here belonged to Asia Minor, name of the town is Antakia or Antioch. These three apostles where of followers of Jesus Christ. They were not Prophets (Nabi) but they were Messengers (Rasul), delivering Message was their sole responsibility.
(THE PEOPLE OF THE TOWN) SAID: "YOU ARE ONLY MORTALS LIKE US, AND THE MERCIFUL HAS NOT SENT DOWN ANYTHING. YOU ARE ONLY LYING." (36:15)
It is a common phenomena that whenever a Prophet or Messenger or heirs of the Prophets calls people to truth, they are told, "you are only mortals like us." People reject them on the assumptions that they are like any other people. On the same token people do not wish to accept Spiritual Masters or Teachers, with the same excuse that they are only mortals like them. Such people are not like ordinary human beings.
THEY SAID, "OUR LORD KNOWS THAT WE HAVE BEEN INDEED BEEN SENT TO YOU. AND WE HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY EXCEPT TO CLEARLY DELIVER (THE MESSAGE)." (36:16-17)
Without being a person of faith, none can recognize a Prophet, a Messenger or a Spiritual Master. Only through the light of faith established within the heart, such a being can be recognized.
(TOWN PEOPLE) SAID, "TRULY, WE SENSE YOU ARE BIRDS OF ILL-OMEN. IF YOU DONT STOP WE WILL STONE YOU AND YOU SHALL NOT SUFFER TERRIBLY AT OUR HANDS."
THEY SAID: "YOUR BIRDS OF ILL OMEN ARE WITH(IN) YOU. IS IT (THAT YOU SENSE EVIL) BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN REMINDED (OF REALITY)? NAY! YOU ARE A TRANSGRESSING PEOPLE." (36:18-19)
AND THERE CAME FROM THE FARTHEST ENDS OF THE CITY A MAN RUNNING, SAYING, "OH MY PEOPLE! FOLLOW THE MESSENGERS." (36:20)
In society where covering up of truth and denial of reality is common place, a person of faith (mu'min) are to be found in the farthest margin, that is why its mentioned that a man came from the 'farthest end.' They are preserved away from leadership and position of power which corrupts.
The words used in addressing is to be observed. He says, 'Oh my people' - this is because people of true faith are always concerned for the people of the society, for the community. Every person of faith are aware of their responsibility for the community. Even though their people may reject them, yet they never reject their people. Such is the Sunnah of every Prophet and Messenger.
"FOLLOW THOSE WHO DO NOT ASK A REWARD FROM YOU AND WHO ARE RIGHTLY GUIDED." (36:21)
This Sign is the criterion through which true Spiritual Master or Guide can be recognized. It is a very telling sign for a true Master that he or she will never ask for a reward, compensation or salary in return of their service. Rather it is they who will serve others. True Masters are rightly guided and they ask not any reward, material gain, prize or money from those who they serve. This is true for Prophets, Messengers of past as well as Awliya Allah or Saints of God of past, present and future.
