Benefits of remembering the Saints, the Friends of God

In his famous book, Memorials of Saints: Muslim Saints and Mystics (Tazkeratul Awliya) Sheikh Fariduddin Attar points out few benefits of remembering the friends of God  who are called Auliya:

1. It quenches the heart of the worldly people.
2. The holy sayings help remember the hereafter.
3. It enlightens the love of God in the heart.
4. When people hear these holy sayings, it inspire them to collect provisions for the hereafter.
5. When people read their lives, people will come to understand how much the hearts of the people of God (ahlullah) were filled with divine love.

Hazrat BuAli Daqqak (ra) was asked, "When we can not act like the great persons and saints, is there any benefit in listening to their words?"

Hazrat BuAli replied, "Yes, even if you cannot imitate their action fully, there are at least two benefits. First, when one listens to the life story of the elders of the religion, aspirations for good work increases in the heart and increase love of God. Secondly pride and arrogance whatever is there in the heart will get diminished and crushed and he or she will come to realize his goodness and badness. Whatever seemed alright before, their faults will be clear."

Shaykh Mahfuz (ra) said, "Do not judge others with the scale of your self, rather compare your self with the scale of the saints, the friends of God, the auliyas. Then you will understand their greatness and your own pettiness."

Hazrat Junaid Bagdadi (ra) was asked, "Does the disciples benefit from the lifestory of the saints?" He replied, "Their sacred utterances are like the solider of Allah. Those seekers who have a weak heart, it will be strengthened by them, he or she will receive help from these soldiers like speeches."

Allah has thus spoken, "O Muhammad! I am retelling the stories of early Messengers. This will enliven and enlighten your heart and you shall receive peace!"

Hazrat Muhammad (s) has thus spoken, "Those who attained faith and the friends of God - discussing and remembering their life story cause Allah's blessings to descend. If anyone spread a table hoping to receive mercy from Allah, he will not be disappointed."

Hazrat Yusuf Hamdani (ra) was asked, "When this age will be gone and the saints and friends of God will go behind the veil, what shall we be with, how shall we console our hearts?" In reply he said, "Everyday read at least eight (8) pages of their life story and what is written about them. I consider this to be a regular spiritual exercise (wazifa) for the spiritually idle."

Once a person asked Hazrat Abdur Rahman Askak (ra), "If anyone recite the Quran but does not realize the depth of what he or she is reciting, will the Quran be able to influence the heart of that person?" He replied, "Of course. Because when a person who is unwell take a medicine when he is ill, and does not know what the exact composition of the medicine, how exactly does it work to fight against the sickness and its mechanism, even then don't you see that the medicine is at work? if the medicine of the perishing world can act like that, think then what is the reality of the Words of God. Shouldn't it then have the effect on the heart as it aught to? It is needless to say that if someone study it with its meanings, then it will certainly have an amplified and quick effect on the heart. And the life story of the auliyas are continuous explanation of the Quran.'

Hazrat Junaid Bagdadi (ra) told to Hazrat Shibli (ra), "Seeking the entire world if you come to find a single saint of God, hold tight of his coat tail."

Yahya ibn Mu'adh ar-Razi (ra) said, "The saint is a fragrant plant placed in the earth by God. The truthful take in his fragrance and it comes into their hearts so that they long for their Master. Then they increase their worship according to their different natures."

Ma'ruf al-Karkhi said, "The saints of God are known by three signs: their thought is of God, their dwelling is in God, and their business is with God."
