Ten causes that result in Allah’s love for His slave and the slave’s love for his Lord | Counsel of Imam ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

1. Reciting the Qur’aan, the Final Revelation of the Last Cycle - while pondering over its meanings and what is meant by it. [Not only the outer, literal meaning situated in the horizontal time, but also its inner meaning, specially that which descends at the landscape of your being, in your vertical time, as inspirations, revelations continues to unveil spirally, moment by moment while it is recited, activating the fountain of abundant grace]

2. Getting closer to Allah by performing voluntary deeds after completing obligatory deeds. This is as is stated in a Hadeeth Qudsi: "My slave continues getting closer to Me by performing voluntary deeds until I love him."

3. Continual remembrance of Allah under all circumstances, with one’s tongue, heart and actions. The extent of one’s love of Allah is determined by this.

4. Giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when you are overtaken by your desires.

[This is the secret of the secrets of why sincere lovers of God becomes lover by giving precedence of their Beloved's Will over theirs; and God's will is most direct and plainly manifest in a way communicated to human knowledge is by His Commands and Prohibitions revealed in the Revelation and following the Pattern of Messenger, this is an universal way and direct path (Seerat al Mustaqim) without exception.

Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him. (John 14:23). Jesus said "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. (John 14:15)

Say (O Mystic Guide) "If you do love God, follow me, God will love you, and forgive your imperfections, as God is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful". (The Quran 3:31)]

5. The heart being avid of Allah’s Names, and Attributes and the heart roaming in that garden of knowledge.

6. Observing Allah’s kindness, goodness and bounties, both hidden and open.

7. And this is the most wonderful, the heart being soft, subdued and meek before Allah.

8. Being alone with Allah during the time when the Lord descends during the last portion of the night (when the Divine Presence and its Energy is felt the most nearmost) while reading His Revealed Words and ending that by asking for forgiveness and repenting.

9. Sitting with the beloved and sincere ones (Awliya Allah, Siddiques, the Shuykhs) benefiting from the most fruitful of their speech. And not to speak unless speaking is more beneficial and you know that it will improve your state and be beneficial to others.

10. Remaining away from every cause that comes between the heart and Allah.

These ten causes take the lovers to the station of true love and bring them to their Beloved by the grace of the Beloved.

Ibn al-Qayyim (1292-1350) was a famous Sunni Islamic jurist, commentator on the Qur'aan, astronomer, chemist, philosopher, psychologist, scientist and theologian. Often he is referred to as "the scholar of the heart," given his extensive works pertaining to human behavior and ethics. These are ten pathways which are tested and verified by generation after generation of saints of God, the awliya, realized gnostics (aref bi'Llah) and the sincere ones (mukhlesin).
