sufi joke of Nasruddin | who is pious?

who is pious?

The Mullahs shouts: 'A pious man grows a beard!'

and Nasruddin replies: 'Then my goat is the most pious of all'

a sufi way of teaching | Once, Mulla Nasruddin went to a fair with his disciples, where people were shooting arrows. Mulla joined the sport and took the first shot, which fell short. The crowd started laughing and the Mulla said: ''This is what happens when you live with an inferiority complex. You cannot reach the target because your heart is not wholly in it.'' The next arrow surpassed the target but Mulla turned to say: ''This is what happens to a man who thinks very highly of himself. He runs so fast that he bypasses the goal.'' Now Mulla shot the third arrow, hitting the target accurately and he said: ''This is me!''

if we leave God out of it | Our Mullah Nasruddin took all his savings and went to buy a shirt. All eyes and ears he entered a tailor's shop, was measured and told: "Will you be back in a week? God willing - your shirt will be finished." The week was an exercise in patience, which duly passed and our hero returned to the tailor: "Unfortunately, there's been a delay. But - God willing - your shirt will be ready tomorrow." Nasrudin returned the next day. "I am sorry" he was greeted "just a few more stiches, a few more...Pray be back tomorrow and - God willing - it will be ready." "And " was the vexed Mullah heard "how long will it take, if we leave God out of it?"

"The Nasruddin stories, known throughout the Middle East, constitute one of the strangest achievements in the history of metaphysics. Superficially, most of the Nasruddin stories may be used as jokes. They are told and retold endlessly in the teahouses and caravanserais, in the homes and on the radio waves, of Asia. But it is inherent in the Nasruddin story that it may be understood at any of many depths. There is the joke, the moral- and the little extra which brings the consciousness of the potential mystic a little further on the way to realization." - The Sufis, Idries Shah

Who was Nasruddin / Nasreddin?
Nasreddin meaning "Victory of the Faith," was a satirical sufi figure who lived during the Middle Ages (around 13th century), somewhere in Greater Khorasan, Iran under the Seljuq rule. Many nations of the Near, Middle East and Central Asia claim the Nasreddin as their own (Afghans, Iranians, Turks, and Uzbeks). Nasreddin was a populist philosopher and wise man, remembered for his funny stories and anecdotes. In China he is known as Afanti, a folk hero of the Uyghurs (a Turkic people).

Much of Nasreddin's actions can be described as illogical yet logical, rational yet irrational, bizarre yet normal, foolish yet sharp, and simple yet profound. What adds even further to his uniqueness is the way he gets across his messages in unconventional yet very effective methods in a profound simplicity.
