Maktub: What does it mean that everything is written?

Maktub is an alchemist term (arabic word) which literally means it is written. From mystical point of view, it points to the fact that whatever happens is already known to the One. It signifies that Destiny exists. It points finger to the fact that everything is already known to God.

Now there is a big problem here. Many people become atheist (or lose faith in God) from misunderstanding the concept of Destiny and from the claim by the theist that God knows everything including our future. An Atheist argue, if God knows everything, then what is the point of punishment or reward? whats the point of Heaven or Hell?

If you are an athiest or deny God then you may put forward more such points.

If you are an theist or believe in God and the fact that God know all (so also future), then how do you answer the question?
